Low Sodium Recipes

Ways to "Dress Up" Francesco Rinaldi No Salt Added Pasta Sauce

After being put on a low sodium diet by my doctor I was so happy to find Francesco Rinaldi's No Salt Added Pasta Sauce on my grocer's shelf.  Despite the lack of flavor or "interest" typical to most jarred tomato sauces, I can't find another option as low in salt content.  It's definitely good enough as a standalone and I often just heat it up and toss onto my pasta, but I also like to add other ingredients based on my taste.  Below are some of my favorite variations on a theme for this versatile tomato sauce.

Spicy Red Pepper Tomato Sauce

Garlic Onion Tomato Sauce

Chunky Vegetable Tomato Sauce

Smokey Red Wine Turkey Tomato Sauce

Spicy Red Pepper Tomato Sauce

1/2 Jar FR No Salt Added Pasta Sauce
1 Red bell pepper, chopped
Crushed red pepper (to taste)
Splash olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a pan and then add in the red bell pepper.  Heat the pepper and stir until it begins to soften.  Add the crushed red pepper and stir.

In a separate pot, begin heating the pasta sauce and add in the pepper mixture.

When heated, add to your noodles.

Serves 2 - 3.

Sodium: 20 - 30 mg per serving.

Chunky Vegetable Tomato Sauce

1/2 Jar FR No Salt Added Pasta Sauce
1/2 Yellow onion, diced
1/2 Red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 Green pepper, chopped
1 Large red tomato, chopped
2 Cloves garlic, crushed or pressed

1/4 Cup fresh chopped cilantro
Splash olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a pan and then add in the onion.  Heat the onion until almost translucent and then add the garlic, peppers and tomato.  Turn down the heat to low-medium and sauté for 3 - 4 minutes.

In a separate pot, begin heating the tomato sauce and once heated, turn down to low-medium and add in the vegetable mixture.  Add the fresh cilantro and stir.

When heated, add to your noodles.

Serves 2 - 3.

Sodium: 40 - 60 mg per serving.

Garlic Onion Tomato Sauce

1/2 Jar FR No Salt Added Pasta Sauce
1 Medium yellow onion, diced
2 Cloves garlic, crushed or pressed

Fresh chopped oregano to taste
Splash olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a pan and then add in the onion.  Heat the onion until almost translucent and then add the garlic.  Stir for one minute being careful not to let the garlic burn.

In a separate pot, begin heating the pasta sauce and add in the onion and garlic.  Add the fresh oregano and stir.

When heated, add to your noodles.

Serves 2 - 3.

Sodium: 30 - 40 mg per serving.

Smokey Red Wine Turkey Tomato Sauce

1/2 Jar FR No Salt Added Pasta Sauce
1/2 lb Ground turkey
1/2 Yellow onion, chopped
1/2 Cup dry red wine
Crushed red pepper (to taste)
Fresh ground black pepper (to taste)
Chili powder (to taste)
Splash olive oil

Heat the olive oil in a pan until it is starting to create small bubbles and add in the fresh ground turkey. Turn the heat down to medium and stir the turkey until it crumbles into small pieces and is browned all over.

Add the chopped onion, all the spices and stir.  Add the red wine and continue to heat for about one minute.

Add in the FR No Salt Added Pasta Sauce and stir until the turkey is thoroughly coated.  Reduce heat to low and lid the pot.  Continue to cook for about 10 minutes stirring a couple of times to make sure it does not stick to the bottom.

When heated, add to your noodles.

Serves 2 - 3.

Sodium: 120 mg per serving.
