Produce Market
Favor Fresh Produce Over Prepared Foods
Maintaining your low sodium diet when dining out doesn't have to be difficult.  Once you learn several "rules" it will become second nature and you will find that eating out at your favorite restaurants is still fun!

Top Tips:

1 - Read the Nutritional Contents label of every food you buy.

2 - Compare products and purchase the one with the lowest sodium content.

3 - Salt substitutes aren't for everyone (sometimes they taste a bit metallic).  Substitute celery seed instead.

4 - Don't purchase a product just because it says "low sodium" on the label.  Check the Nutritional Content label first.  Some "low sodium" canned foods such as soups are still very high in sodium!

5 - Don't be afraid to buy products such as no-salt potato chips.  They may not taste like what you're used to in the beginning, but you'll learn to love 'em!

6 - Some canned or prepared foods will never have a low enough salt content for you.  Be willing to buy fresh ingredients and make your own food.  Making your own stock is one great way to limit your sodium intake.

7 - Substitute canned vegetables with frozen or, even better, fresh.  Canned vegetables tend to have a high salt content and the no-salt canned vegetables sometimes don't taste so great.

8 - Shop at your local farmer's market for fresh vegetables.
